Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister-Designate, has expressed strong opposition to LGBTQ+ practices, citing their inconsistency with his personal values, religious beliefs, and Ghana’s cultural and moral heritage.
Speaking before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, 2025, Iddrisu stated, “It’s a cultural wrong. As a Muslim, you know where I stand on this matter. It is repugnant to my values and ethics.” He emphasized the importance of protecting Ghana’s cultural identity and moral standards, urging respect for the country’s social norms.
Iddrisu continued, “I do not believe that many Ghanaian parents would want their children to be raised in ways that contradict how we were brought up. The idea that a man can relate to a man or a woman to a woman is not consistent with our values as Ghanaians. As a nation, we define our social and cultural values and expect others to respect them.”
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which seeks to address issues related to LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana.
Earlier on January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama met with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra to propose a new strategy for the bill. He suggested that the legislation be introduced as a government-sponsored initiative rather than a private member’s bill, arguing that this approach would provide greater legitimacy and improve its chances of passing through Parliament.
Haruna Iddrisu concluded by reiterating the nation’s duty to uphold its values within the framework of the constitution, emphasizing that these principles must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
We need to understand that both Religious and Cultural perspectives argue that LGBTQ+ practices contradict the natural order and Divine purpose of creation as outlined in sacred Scriptures.
ReplyDeleteDivine teachings always emphasize that human relationships were designed for procreation and the continuation of the human race within the framework of a male-female union.
From this standpoint, LGBTQ+ lifestyles are seen as contrary to moral and ethical principles, undermining traditional family structures and the spiritual values that guide human uprightness.
Proponents of this view advocate for adherence to Divine laws and natural principles as essential for preserving societal harmony and fulfilling the Purpose of Life.
