Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister-Designate for Education, has reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s dedication to refining the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy to make it more sustainable and beneficial for Ghanaians.
The policy, introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration, was a key focus during President Mahama’s 2024 election campaign, where he pledged to enhance its implementation rather than abolish it.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Haruna Iddrisu assured that the government has no intention of canceling the Free SHS program. Instead, he emphasized plans to expand its scope and efficiency to ensure it aligns with Ghana’s educational goals.
“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention to cancel Free SHS,” Iddrisu stated. “Even during his campaign, he made it clear that his goal is to expand the program, ensuring it delivers maximum benefits to Ghanaians.”
He further explained that this initiative aligns with the constitutional provisions under Article 25 and Article 38 of the 1992 Constitution, which outline the objectives of Ghana’s educational policy.
Iddrisu also announced plans to convene a stakeholder forum to solicit ideas and recommendations for strengthening the education sector. This review will provide an opportunity to address challenges and refine the Free SHS program for long-term sustainability.
“The important thing is that the President will subject the Free SHS to a review, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of Ghanaians while upholding its core objectives,” he concluded.
