President John Dramani Mahama has called on members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to critically assess government policies, stressing that accountability is crucial for national progress.
He made these remarks on Wednesday, March 26, during a courtesy visit by GBA leader Efua Ghartey.
Emphasizing the importance of constructive criticism, Mahama urged civil society organizations, including the GBA, to speak up when governance takes a wrong turn.
"You have been strong advocates for the rule of law, human rights, the constitution, and freedoms. Your role is vital to our society’s progress," he said.
“As I have always maintained, civil society must have the liberty to highlight when things are not going as they should. As our local saying goes, ‘If a person is charting a path, he may not realize it is crooked; only onlookers can point it out.’”
“We welcome your feedback, and I believe that is how governance should be,” Mahama added.
His remarks reaffirm his administration’s commitment to transparency and dialogue, underscoring the essential role of legal and civil society institutions in ensuring good governance.
