Arrest MPs responsible for vetting chaos – Gyampo to Dampare

Political analyst, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, to take immediate action against Members of Parliament (MPs) who vandalized state property during a heated altercation at the Appointments Committee last Thursday.

During the ministerial vetting on January 30, some MPs damaged microphones and tables in protest against the Majority caucus' decision to proceed with the vetting despite their appeal to reschedule it from Thursday to Friday.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3, Prof. Gyampo criticized the Minority’s actions and urged the police to hold those responsible accountable.

“I have said that Dampare has previously arrested Members of Parliament and government officials for violating traffic rules. It cannot be acceptable for individuals to destroy public property without consequences,” he stated.

He emphasized that taxpayers' money was used to procure the damaged items, making it imperative for the authorities to act.

“The police should arrest those responsible for the destruction of state property. We cannot allow such actions to go unpunished,” he insisted.

Prof. Gyampo also commended the Majority caucus for their patience, noting that democracy operates on majority rule.

“The Majority group has been overly tolerant of the Minority. However, tolerance should not be mistaken for allowing the Minority to dictate proceedings in Parliament,” he added.

He cautioned that while democracy allows for diverse opinions, it should not permit what he described as "minority tyranny" in decision-making processes.
