Ghana will become Africa’s AI hub in four years – Sam George

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has outlined an ambitious plan to establish Ghana as Africa's leading hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) by 2028.

This vision, which aligns with the government’s broader technological and economic aspirations, aims to leverage AI, big data, cybersecurity, and digital transformation to position Ghana at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, the Ningo-Prampram MP highlighted his strategic vision for Ghana’s AI ecosystem. He emphasized the need for collaboration between government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and global technology firms to ensure that Ghana not only participates in the AI revolution but leads it.

“AI in 2025 is like Bitcoin in 2013,” he stated, underscoring the transformative potential of the technology.

Samuel George noted that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has a well-defined AI policy that builds upon the foundation laid by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. He pledged to review and enhance the existing AI strategy to ensure its relevance in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

“We are going to take the current AI strategy developed by the previous government, review it, and make it fit for purpose by engaging industry stakeholders. Our goal is to ensure Ghana becomes the hub for AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, data analytics, and data processing on the African continent,” he explained.

He also promised to deliver on the government’s manifesto pledge to establish innovation hubs across the country. These hubs will serve as platforms for nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and integrating AI into big data initiatives, driving Ghana’s digital transformation forward.

Samuel George’s vision reflects Ghana’s determination to harness emerging technologies to create economic opportunities, enhance innovation, and solidify its position as a leader in Africa’s digital economy.
