Strengthening Community Capacity on Human Rights and Environmental Sustainability in Nkawie

Human rights educator, Mr. Clement Kadogbe, has led a Human Rights Community Sensitisation and Empowerment campaign in Nkawie, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region, as part of the Building Resilient and Active Communities in Extractive Landscapes in Ghana (BRACE) Project. The initiative is being implemented by A Rocha Ghana with the aim of empowering communities affected by extractive activities.

The sensitisation exercise focused on educating participants about their fundamental human rights and civic responsibilities, with particular emphasis on the Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment. Through interactive discussions and practical engagements, participants were equipped with knowledge and tools to confidently assert their rights while also fulfilling their obligations as responsible citizens.

At the close of the campaign, participants expressed increased awareness and enhanced capacity to engage duty bearers, demand accountability, and take active steps toward protecting their environment and natural resources. Many acknowledged that the training had strengthened their ability to identify human rights violations linked to extractive activities and to seek appropriate redress.

The BRACE Project — Building Resilient and Active Communities in Extractive Landscapes in Ghana — is funded by the European Union and seeks to build the capacity of communities and civil society organisations to address human rights violations associated with extractive operations. The project employs strategic advocacy, media engagement, Community-Based Courtroom Advocacy, and structured engagements with duty bearers to promote accountability and justice.

Overall, the project aims to empower target groups to contribute meaningfully to sustainable and equitable environmental management and natural resource governance in Ghana by fostering collaboration among government institutions, extractive actors, and local communities.
