The Budding Lawyers Network (BLN) has held its February 2026 mentorship session, delivering a thought-provoking and practical discussion on discipline, time management, and effective study habits for law students.
The session, themed “Mastering Discipline: Time Management and Study Habits for Law Students,” featured Mr. Maxwell Addae-Kusi, a First Class LL.B. graduate of Kings University College and a Professional Law student at the Ghana School of Law, Makola.
Speaking to participants during the virtual mentorship session, Mr. Addae-Kusi emphasized that academic success in law school is not determined by luck or extra time, but by consistent daily habits and discipline.
According to him, every student has the same 24 hours in a day, yet the difference between successful and struggling students lies in how effectively they manage their time and structure their priorities. He noted that many students often blame time constraints, whereas the real challenge is a lack of direction and proper planning.
He urged law students to balance their academic responsibilities with personal life and self-development, stressing that success begins with clarity of purpose. He advised students to dream, write down their goals, break them into manageable steps, and take consistent action toward achieving them.
Mr. Addae-Kusi also cautioned against studying based on mood, urging students instead to develop structured study plans. He encouraged participants never to miss lectures, to read widely beyond faculty handouts, and to take personal responsibility for their academic progress.
Addressing the issue of procrastination, he explained that it often stems from fear of failure, perfectionism, and uncertainty.
While he acknowledged that procrastination itself is not entirely harmful, he stressed that delaying important priorities can severely affect academic performance. He encouraged students to start tasks immediately, regardless of how large or difficult they may seem, and to tackle challenging subjects early.
He further highlighted consistency as the defining characteristic of top-performing law students, noting that disciplined students commit to doing what they say they will do, even when they lack motivation. He advised participants to regularly solve past examination questions, seek mentorship, ask for clarity when confused, and embrace proper prior planning to prevent poor performance.
The guest speaker also warned students against excessive use of social media, stating that aspiring lawyers must remain focused and learn to say no to distractions that derail their long-term goals.
He encouraged students to “think on paper” by writing their ideas, creating structured notes, and preparing summaries of key concepts. Ultimately, he advised them to develop a “summary of summaries,” which would serve as a master academic plan.
