Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang - Ghana’s First Female Vice President

Professor Opoku-Agyemang earned her undergraduate degree in English and French from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and later pursued her master's and doctorate degrees in Literature and Education at York University in Canada. She dedicated much of her life to academia, teaching at the University of Cape Coast, where she rose through the ranks to become the first female Vice-Chancellor of a Ghanaian public university in 2008. Her tenure as Vice-Chancellor was marked by her commitment to expanding access to higher education and improving academic standards.


Public Service

In 2013, Professor Opoku-Agyemang was appointed as Ghana's Minister for Education by President John Dramani Mahama. In this role, she implemented transformative policies in Ghana's educational system, including the introduction of the Progressive Free Senior High School policy and initiatives to enhance teacher training and infrastructure. She also emphasized the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to prepare Ghanaian youth for global opportunities.

In 2020, Professor Opoku-Agyemang made history when she was selected as the running mate of former President John Dramani Mahama for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Her nomination marked the first time a major political party in Ghana chose a woman as its vice-presidential candidate, symbolizing progress in women's participation in politics.
