Highlights of John Mahama’s Inaugural Speech: A Call for National Reset and Transformation

President John Dramani Mahama’s inaugural address at Black Star Square marked a pivotal moment, outlining a bold vision for economic recovery, governance reforms, and national unity. The newly sworn-in leader emphasized accountability, innovation, and unity, urging Ghanaians to join him in a collective "national reset" to foster a more resilient and prosperous Ghana.

Gratitude to Ghanaians for the Mandate

Expressing heartfelt thanks to voters, Mahama acknowledged their trust in his leadership, promising tangible change.

“To the millions of my fellow countrymen and women who joined long queues and waited in the sun to vote for me, you have my sincerest thanks for honoring me. Your courage to bring change will not go in vain,” he affirmed.

Mahama pledged to govern with sound judgment and take full responsibility for addressing the nation’s challenges. “I will have the humility to take responsibility for any challenges and be willing to ask for help in resolving them,” he assured.

Priorities for Economic Recovery

Mahama outlined four key pillars for his administration:

Economic restoration and stabilization

Improvement of the business and investment environment

Governance and constitutional reforms

Accountability and the fight against corruption

Reassuring the business community, he declared, “We will rationalize our tax systems to make them fair and transparent. The business community must know that Ghana is back in business.”

Call for a National Reset

Mahama emphasized the importance of restoring faith in Ghana’s institutions and leadership.

“We need a reset of faith — in our country, in our institutions, and in ourselves,” he said. “You are Ghana, I am Ghana. Together, we make this country. Let us enter into a covenant to build the Ghana we all desire.”

Urging a shift in attitudes, behaviors, and mindsets, he called on citizens to envision the Ghana they wish to leave for future generations.

Empowering Youth and Women

The President spotlighted the youth as the heartbeat of democracy, pledging to implement a 24-hour economy model to stimulate job creation and boost local industries.

“Our youth represent the heartbeat of our democracy. Their ambitions will drive our policies,” he said.

He also celebrated Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s historic achievement as Ghana’s first female vice president.

“With Nana Jane by my side, we are committed to creating a society where barriers are shattered, and ambitions are realized,” Mahama declared, vowing to empower women and foster inclusivity.

Introducing the 24-Hour Economy

Unveiling the concept of a 24-hour economy, Mahama highlighted its potential to unlock dormant economic opportunities by keeping markets, public services, and businesses operational around the clock.

“This model will create decent jobs for young people, stimulate local industry, attract foreign investments, and foster resilient communities,” he explained.

He envisioned bustling markets, flexible business hours, and responsive public services catering to citizens’ diverse needs.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusivity

Mahama emphasized his administration’s commitment to diversity, ensuring every Ghanaian, regardless of background, plays a role in national progress.

“Our decisions will prioritize inclusivity, ensuring everyone has a seat at the table,” he stated. “We will create an equitable society where opportunities are open to all.”

Engagement with the Business Community

Addressing business leaders and entrepreneurs, Mahama highlighted the private sector’s critical role in Ghana’s development.

“Your innovation and dedication will be the backbone of our success story,” he said, pledging to foster a business-friendly environment and encourage public-private partnerships.

Regional and International Cooperation

Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties with neighboring countries and fostering regional stability and growth.

“To our friends from across Africa and the world, I say ‘Akwaaba!’ Your presence is a testament to the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation that exist between our nations,” he remarked.

A Patriotic Call to Action

Mahama concluded with a rallying call, inviting Ghanaians to partner with his administration in building a better future.

“This is a patriotic call to action for all of us to participate in building a nation that lives up to its promise, where unity, progress, and equality are not just ideals but the very fabric of our nation,” he urged.

Ending with a prayer for divine blessings on Ghana, Mahama declared, “Let us write the next chapter in Ghana’s story — one of promise, transparency, and transformative progress. May God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong.”
