The Government of Ghana has expressed profound regret over the tragic loss of up to eight lives during a violent clash involving illegal miners and security forces at a mining site in Obuasi.
In response to the incident, President John Dramani Mahama has directed an immediate investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the clashes. The President has assured the public that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully will face justice.
A statement issued by the Presidency on Sunday, January 19, 2025, further revealed that the government has instructed AngloGold Ashanti, the management of the mining concession, to fully cover the medical expenses of the injured individuals. Additionally, the company has been tasked with facilitating the burial arrangements for those who lost their lives in the incident.
To prevent similar occurrences in the future, the President has also mandated security agencies to take swift measures to restore peace in the area and enforce stricter control over mining concessions.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson to the President, signed off on the statement, underscoring the government's commitment to ensuring justice and safeguarding lives within the Obuasi mining community.
