President John Dramani Mahama has taken a significant step toward enhancing Ghana’s democratic governance by establishing a Constitutional Review Committee. This decision aligns with his commitment to advance the implementation of the Constitutional Review Process.
Announced on Sunday, January 19, 2025, the committee comprises eight distinguished members, each recognized for their expertise and dedication to national service. The team includes:
1. Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh - Chairman
2. Justice Sophia Adinyirah - Member
3. Prof. Kwame Karikari - Member
4. Mrs. Charlotte Osei - Member
5. Dr. Godwin Djokoto - Member
6. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu - Member
7. Dr. Esi Ansah - Member
8. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya - Secretary
The primary mandate of the committee is to identify and address gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional review efforts, including those by the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee. Their work involves engaging key stakeholders to solicit views on proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution and delivering actionable recommendations to enhance governance.
The President’s decision to form this committee reflects his commitment to democratic growth, good governance, and transparency. By involving experts from diverse fields, the initiative underscores a dedication to fostering meaningful constitutional reforms.
The committee has been tasked to submit its recommendations for constitutional amendments within five months for government consideration.
