President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to investigate the National Cathedral Project, an initiative launched by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship center and a symbol of Ghana’s religious heritage.
The project has faced numerous allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, sparking concerns about its funding and implementation.
Addressing a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), President Mahama raised questions about the financial rationale behind the project amid Ghana's ongoing economic challenges.
“Regarding the contentious National Cathedral issue, CHRAJ has already directed the government to audit the project and investigate any potential misuse of public funds. We will soon initiate a full investigation into the matter,” he stated.
He also criticized the cost of the project, highlighting its lack of economic justification. “In the current economic conditions Ghana is facing, spending $400 million on this project is indefensible. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, serving the Christian community in Nigeria, was built for just $30 million.”
This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to addressing concerns about transparency and accountability in the management of the project.
