The Ministry of Energy has assured Ghanaians that the $379 million debt owed to Karpowership, the operator of the Aboadze power barge, will not affect electricity supply.
Karpowership recently threatened to suspend power generation if the government fails to settle the outstanding arrears. However, sources indicate that Energy Minister John Jinapor has engaged the company on a plan to clear the debt.
Speaking on the issue, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Isaac Agyei Kwakye, emphasized that the government is taking steps to prevent any power disruptions.
“The Minister believes that by improving efficiency in the system, we can significantly reduce these liabilities. The Auditor General’s report recently highlighted some under-declared revenues that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has yet to account for,” he explained.
He further stressed the importance of establishing a centralized account for all electricity revenue collections to ensure that Independent Power Producers (IPPs), including Karpowership, are paid accordingly.
“The government has a duty to provide electricity to the nation, and as a ministry, we will do everything within our power to fulfill this responsibility. While the debt poses a challenge, we are committed to finding solutions to address it,” he assured.
