President Mahama to Visit Bawku Today.

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to visit Bawku on Tuesday, January 14, as part of efforts to address the persistent conflict in the area.

While the specific details of his agenda remain undisclosed, the visit aligns with President Mahama’s campaign pledge to prioritize resolving the Bawku conflict if elected. He is expected to meet with the Bawku Naba, local leaders, and other key stakeholders to discuss strategies for restoring peace and stability to the troubled region.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict in Bawku, which reignited in October, stems from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute. Tensions escalated after a rival Chief returned to the town following years of exile, sparking violent clashes that have claimed numerous lives, including those of women and children.

The unrest has disrupted daily life in the area, leaving residents in fear. Despite a dawn-to-dusk curfew imposed by security forces, sporadic gun attacks persist, as combatants exploit lapses in security. The situation has paralyzed economic activities, forced schools and businesses to shut down, and displaced many residents, who have sought refuge in neighboring communities.

A Renewed Commitment to Peace

President Mahama’s visit is seen as a significant step in demonstrating his commitment to mediating a lasting resolution to the crisis. His planned engagement with traditional authorities, community leaders, and government officials aims to foster dialogue and lay the groundwork for sustainable peace-building initiatives.

Security Measures Intensified

To ensure safety during the visit, security arrangements have been heightened. Authorities are working to minimize the risk of further violence and protect all participants as efforts to restore calm continue.

Observers remain hopeful that President Mahama’s involvement will mark a turning point in the quest for enduring peace in Bawku.
