Interior Ministry imposes curfew on Nkwanta

The Ministry of the Interior has imposed a curfew on Nkwanta Township in the Oti Region, effective Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The curfew, running from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, aims to address escalating security concerns in the area following recent violence.

This decision follows a recommendation by the Oti Regional Security Council to curb unrest and restore calm. In a statement signed by Chief Director Doreen P. Annan, the Ministry called on residents to remain calm and resolve disputes through established mechanisms.

The government also reminded the public of an existing ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons in Nkwanta and surrounding areas. Anyone found violating this directive will be arrested and prosecuted.

The Ministry emphasized that the curfew is designed to protect lives and property while creating a peaceful environment for resolving conflicts. Residents were urged to comply with the curfew and cooperate with security measures.

Background to the Conflict

The renewed clashes in Nkwanta, which erupted on January 16, have so far resulted in three deaths, multiple injuries, and widespread fear among residents. The violence continued into Thursday night, with reports of sporadic gunfire by unidentified individuals.

Videos circulating captured the sound of gunshots and significant property damage. Sources indicate the conflict is tribal in nature, involving three indigenous groups: the Challa and the Adele on one side, and the Achodes on the other.

The ongoing violence has displaced approximately 200 people, forcing them to flee to nearby towns such as Pampawie and Ahamansu, as well as other locations within the Kadjebi District. Kadjebi, which borders the Nkwanta Municipality, has become a refuge for those seeking safety.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring peace and security in the region, pledging to work with stakeholders to resolve the conflict and bring lasting stability to Nkwanta Township.
