President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to newly sworn-in ministers, cautioning them against any involvement in illegal mining activities, also known as “galamsey.”
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 14 ministers on Thursday, January 30, 2025, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to combating the galamsey menace and announced plans to engage stakeholders in addressing the issue.
“No member of this government is permitted to participate in any form of small-scale mining or galamsey. Anyone caught engaging in such activities will face swift and severe consequences,” President Mahama stated. He added, “We plan to hold stakeholder consultations to build a broad consensus on the necessary steps to protect our environment from further destruction.”
The President also revealed the government’s decision to revoke all mining leases granted for operations in forest reserves under the previous administration. This move is part of a broader strategy to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and prevent further environmental degradation caused by illegal and unsustainable mining practices.
He stressed that immediate steps would be taken to halt mining in these sensitive areas and assured that legal action would be pursued against those responsible for such activities. The President’s remarks underscore his administration’s resolve to protect the environment and prioritize sustainable development.
