Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger formally withdraw from ECOWAS

ECOWAS Acknowledges Withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger; Implements Transitional Measures

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger from the regional bloc, effective Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

In a press statement released by the ECOWAS Commission, the organization reiterated its unwavering commitment to regional solidarity while outlining transitional measures to minimize disruptions for citizens and businesses in the affected countries.

The withdrawal of these three nations marks a significant shift in West Africa’s regional dynamics, as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have historically played crucial roles in ECOWAS’ integration agenda. Despite their departure, ECOWAS emphasized its openness to future collaboration and engagement with the trio.

To ensure continuity and mitigate adverse impacts, ECOWAS has issued the following directives to member states and relevant authorities:

• Recognition of National Documents: Member countries are to continue recognizing national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo, held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, until further notice.

• Uninterrupted Trade: Goods and services originating from the three countries will remain eligible for the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies, ensuring seamless trade flows within the region.

• Visa-Free Movement: Citizens of the three nations will retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS territories, as outlined in existing protocols.

The Commission stated that these transitional arrangements will remain in effect until a comprehensive framework for future engagement with the withdrawing nations is determined by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The statement reflects ECOWAS’ commitment to maintaining strong regional ties and minimizing the impact of this development on economic integration and social cohesion.
